When to visit:
While Pacific Beach is enjoyable any time of year, our favorite months are September and October. The summer crowds begin to thin, the ocean remains warm, and the weather is nearly perfect for beach days, surfing, biking, and outdoor dining. If your schedule allows, plan your visit around Pacific BeachFest in early October—a lively weekend filled with live music, local food, art, and one of the best community beach festivals in Southern California.

Why We Like It
While not located directly in Pacific Beach, nearby Balboa Park is home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, one of the most celebrated and biodiverse zoos on Earth. Spanning 100 acres and home to more than 12,000 animals representing over 650 species and subspecies, the zoo offers far more than just incredible wildlife encounters. While the giant pandas often steal the spotlight, visitors can also enjoy interactive wildlife presentations, botanical gardens and guided tours, family-friendly play areas, scenic walking paths, and even beer gardens and outdoor dining throughout the park. Why We Like It
Docked along the downtown harbor, the USS Midway was once one of the longest-serving aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy, and today visitors can explore massive flight decks, restored aircraft, pilot ready rooms, sleeping quarters, and interactive exhibits that bring the ship’s history to life. What makes the museum especially compelling is that many of the volunteers are former Midway sailors and veterans themselves, adding personal stories and insight you simply cannot get from a traditional museum. Even for visitors who are not military enthusiasts, the scale of the ship, the hands-on exhibits, and the panoramic views of San Diego Bay make it one of the city’s most unique and worthwhile attractions. Why We Like It
This luxury hotel is right on the beach and just steps away from the best local bars, restaurants, and shopping in all of PB. Parking can be a nightmare around PB, but this hotel has valet and covered parking for $45 per night. It also has free bikes for you to get around PB so you don’t have to worry about anything once you get to the hotel. Two very similar hotels in the sme location, not as luxurious, but worth comparing prices are Ocean Park Inn and Tower23 Hotel.

Why We Like It
Boardwalk Hotel has direct beach access and is about half the price of beachside hotels. You are a short (Free) bike ride from the heart of PB without the late-night noise that surrounds PB, and the property has a ton of extras that will make your stay in PB very memorable. Two important notes, however. The property is 2 stories but does not have elevators. Also, parking is $35/day and you must call ahead for parking.

Rocky’s is a 21-and-over establishment.
Why We Like It
This no-frills neighborhood pub has built a legendary local reputation around a remarkably simple menu of burgers, cheeseburgers, fries, and cold beer. If you want polished beachfront dining, this ain’t it. But if you want a classic burger at a place San Diego locals passionately argue is among the city’s best, Rocky’s is worth the short trip from the beach.
