What makes Key West unique is how seamlessly adventure and relaxation coexist. Surrounded by turquoise waters, coral reefs, and endless sunshine, the island appeals equally to travelers seeking adrenaline-fueled experiences and those craving slow, soul-restoring escapes. Your day might begin with snorkeling over coral reefs and end with a sunset sail followed by fresh seafood and live island music. Duval Street offers lively nightlife for those who want it, yet peaceful corners of the island are always just minutes away.
While we don’t exactly rate this destination as family-friendly, due to the nightlife and lack of resorts or theme parks, if you have kids 7+ years old, the island does offer snorkling, dolphin encounters, and several other outdoor activities.
There are endless activities in Key West, but the one thing that is a must, since you are as close to it as Americanly possible, is to visit Dry Tortugas National Park. Located just 70 miles west of Key West, and only accessible by seaplane or boat, Dry Tortugas is one of the most remote National Parks in the U.S. with no crowds, no development, and a TON of history. While the fort is stunning, it’s not the reason to visit Dry Tortugas. The snorking here is NEXT-LEVEL with exceptionally clear waters, healthy coral reefs, and more tropical fish, turtles, and rays than anywhere I’ve traveled in the U.S.
Kayaking through mangroves is a truly unique experience. It is especially so when you consider the possibility of encountering manatees, nurse sharks, and other marine life.
If journeying out to Dry Tortugas seems to troublesome, this trip lets you snorkel North America’s only living coral reef with a margarita in hand. There are three times of day to choose from and the signature cocktail changes depending on which you choose, but for the best snorkeling, choose the morning trip. The water is typically clearer with less wind and fewer people to contend with when parking.
We love this Old Town Trolley Hop-On Hop-Off Tour because it’s one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience Key West. It lets you enjoy the charming streets and crystal-clear waters without the hassle of driving or parking in an unfamiliar place. With unlimited hop-on, hop-off access at 13 convenient stops, you can explore the island at your own pace all day long, knowing another trolley is never far away. The friendly conductors add local insight as they guide you through this tropical paradise. As a bonus, it includes complimentary admission to the Sails to Rails Museum, one of Key West’s top attractions, adding a rich layer of history to round out the experience.

One of the more affordable, quiet resorts, but still within a short walking distance to famous bars and restaurants on Duval Street.
Location, location, location. This hotel is near the best shopping, restaurants, bars, and entertainment in the area. It is also steps away from most departing docks that we list in recommended activities.
The Seaside Cafe at the Southernmost House is a family-owned and operated Island eatery just a few steps from the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A new addition to the Key West landscape, but already well known for island classics such as their Mansion Mojitos, Honey-Butter Lobster Biscuits, and stunning artisan wood-fired pizzas. The Seaside Cafe is located on the grounds of Southernmost House, a charming Victorian mansion on the “quiet end” of Duval Street.
We like Seaside Cafe at the Southernmost House mainly for the oceanfront setting and laid-back Key West vibe. It feels like a true vacation spot. The food is fun and satisfying (think lobster dishes and cocktails), but it’s really the combination of views, atmosphere, and experience that makes it great.
Dorada Key West offers a vibrant fusion of Baja-Mediterranean cuisine in an intimate beachfront setting. Located inside the iconic Casa Marina, our menu features an enticing array of shareable dishes, artfully composed appetizers, fresh catch seafood entrées, hand-cut steaks, and indulgent desserts. Whether you’re craving a quick cocktail and snack, a casual lunch, or a more formal celebratory meal, Dorada caters to every occasion.
We like Dorada because it blends a beautiful beachfront setting with a more upscale, polished vibe. You’re dining right on the sand with sunset views, live music, and a resort atmosphere that feels special. The food and cocktails are a step above those at typical beach spots, making it feel like a memorable night out rather than just a meal.
Step into Moondog Cafe, Key West’s go-to spot for bold flavor, fresh coffee, and laid-back island charm. Just steps from the Hemingway House, it’s where locals and visitors gather for creative comfort food, indulgent desserts, and a vibe that feels effortlessly cool. Come for the key lime pie, stay for the experience.
You won’t get a better breakfast or a better cup of coffee anywhere on the island, and don’t get me started on their pastries! But more than breakfast, Moondog’s entire menu, from burgers and seafood to vegan options, is all extremely tasty.
